Red Sorrel was introduced to Jamaica by the British in the 17th Century. The (dried) red sepals of the hibiscus flower are the main element in the drink that many crave for. The refreshment – commonly served on ice is the unmistakable symbol of Christmas around the Caribbean. Matched with humble seasonings such as ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg (or even add a touch of rum if you wish!) - The drinks undeniable delicate aroma and deep crimson colour bring a wave of festivity. However, there is no need to wait to pleasure your tastebuds with flavour – as this plant is cropped and available all year round. Enjoy your glass – today!

Directions & use:

  • Hot & cold beverages  Put the dried hibiscus flowers about teaspoons (10 ml), but you can use more or less as needed for a stronger or weaker flavour into an empty teapot, pour the boiling water into the teapot. Steep for five minutes, sweeten the tea as desired.The smooth, sweet taste of honey or Sugar and zero-calorie sweeteners are also good choices. If you want to give your tea a little "something extra, you can add cinnamon, mint, or lime wedge as garnish.
  • Fresh food – Add a few leaves to raw salad to substitute for beetroot or for colouring.
  • Infused – One handful of sorrel to a jug of water with your desired fruits and sweeteners.
  • Cooking - Add leaves to your stews and sauces.
  • Skin treatment – Emollient and lotions can be produced for moisturising. Or alternatively, sorrel can be soaked and applied to affected skin.
